Local Area Adaptation Plans are plans which seek to look at the vulnerability and exposure of specific locations to climate change. These plans include social, economic, and physical actions to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, at the local level. LAAPs also collect baseline data to inform future decisions, and include Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks against which their impact can be evaluated.

The selected local areas (Airport and Fitches Creek Area, Jolly Harbour to Johnsons Point Area, and St. John’s City) are strategically located across the island, and each have characteristics that make them highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, i.e., population size and density, residential communities, commercial uses, exposure to storm surge, exposure to coastal erosion, etc. and therefore would benefit from adaptation interventions.

As a part of the NAP project, we have conducted a Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment from which climate change adaptation options have been identified for each area. These adaptation measures and the subsequent adaptation plan that is being developed is intended to influence the future development of the area.

We will be hosting a stakeholder validation workshop on:

• November 3rd – Airport, Fitches Creek and Piggotts Area

• November 8th – Darkwood Beach and Jolly Harbour Area

• November 10th – St. John’s City

We would appreciate your feedback on the measures being recommended based on the climate context and risk in your area.
