CARE Project

The CARE PROJECT is a government facility, which provides a home and basic care for a number of children with severe mental and physical disabilities. Many have been abandoned by their families. It is currently housed in the paediatric ward at the old Holberton hospital. Most of the residents have never known a life outside the care project and sadly most are likely to live the rest of their lives in such care. The Care Project is primarily a home for children, although the ages of the residents range from eight years old to forty-eight.

The Care Project was originally an unofficial name for a group of children who lived in the functioning paediatric ward at the Holberton Hospital. When the hospital closed and moved to the new Mount St John Medical Center site, these children were left under the care of The Citizens Welfare Division and then in 2009 The Fiennes Institute.

In April 2013 the residents from the Amazing Grace Charity were also transferred to The Care Project. The residents suffer from a range of illnesses and conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Hydrocephalus, blindness, seizures and many neurological diseases.

History

  • The Care Project is a Health Care Facility under the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment that provides residential care for approximately 16 persons. We provide medical and personal assistance to differently abled children and adults on a 24 hour basis.
  • In 2009 after the move from Holberton Hospital to Mount St. John Medical Centre (MSJMC) there were approximately seven (7) residents of the State with developmental challenges that needed nursing care and life skills support.  These residents were cared for by the Fiennes Institute.
  • In April 2013, the Amazing Grace Foundation, a non-profit organization closed its doors.  Five (5) of their residents were transferred to the Care Project by permission of the Ministry of Health with assistance from the former Governor General, Dame Louise Lake-Tack and the Management of the Fiennes Institute.
  • By November 2015, the Ministry’s Strategic Plan was put in place to ensure a proper management and structure of the Care Project.
  • Our structure comprises of an Operations Manager, Matron, Acting Matron, Nursing Staff, Administrative Staff, Kitchen Staff, Housekeeping Staff, Drivers, and Security Officers.
