Health Officials in Antigua and Barbuda Mourn the Passing of Dr. Gemma Chery
The Ministry of Health joins the regional health community in mourning the passing of Dr. Gemma Chery, a dedicated public health advocate and esteemed physician. Dr. Chery, who served as the Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) Country Programme Specialist for Antigua and Barbuda passed away on Tuesday, just days before her 48th birthday.
Minister of Health, Sir Molwyn Joseph, along with Permanent Secretaries Ena Dalso-Henry and Stacey Gregg-Paige, and the management and staff of the Ministry, extend heartfelt condolences to Dr. Chery’s family, friends, and colleagues. They acknowledged her significant contributions to the nation’s healthcare system, emphasizing the pivotal role she played in advancing numerous public health initiatives.
“Dr. Chery was an instrumental force in strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare landscape. Her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to public health led to the successful implementation of critical health projects that have positively impacted the lives of our citizens. We are deeply saddened by her passing and express our gratitude for her invaluable service to our nation,” said Minister Joseph.
Throughout her career, Dr. Chery worked tirelessly across the Caribbean region, making meaningful contributions in St. Lucia, Guyana, Suriname, and Antigua and Barbuda. She was known for her data-driven approach, compassionate leadership, and relentless advocacy for improved healthcare systems.
The Ministry of Health recognizes Dr. Chery’s profound legacy and remains committed to continuing the work she championed in public health and wellness.
