The Nursing Council

The legal framework under which it operates is the Nurses Registration ACT and Nurses Registration Regulations CAP 296, of the Laws of Antigua and Barbuda.

The Council is comprised of seven (7) members selected under the Act and is headed by a Chairman who is selected from among the members. The current Chairman is the Principal Nursing Officer, Ms. Margaret Smith.

Another key member of the Council is the Registrar who is also elected from among the members. The current Registrar Mrs. Clarissa Christopher, Matron of the Fiennes Institute.

The Chief Medical Officer, who is currently Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas is also a member of the Council selected under the Act.

The Council functions in making and implementing rules for the following purposes:

  • Regulating the formation, maintenance and publication of a Register for professional nurses.
  • Regulating the conditions of admission to the Register.
  • Regulating the conduct of any examination which may be prescribed as a condition for admission to the Register or with anything connected with such examination.
  • Prescribing the causes for which, the condition under which and the manner in which nurses may be fined, suspended or removed from the Register the procedure for the restoration to the Register of nurses who have been removed therefrom.
  • Prescribing of fees for registration and re-registration as well as for any other service provided by the Council
  • Prescribing standards for the training and education of professional nurses.
  • Prescribing professional and ethical guidelines for the conduct of professional nurses within the jurisdiction of Antigua and Barbuda.
